Gwendolyn Jones (née Dahlman) was an pure-blood American witch and the matriarch of the Jones family. She was descended from the equally pure-blooded Dahlman family, who were notable due to their connection with the Cherokee tribe. She attended Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and was sorted into Horned Serpent House. However, her school days were marred by trouble, as she was mischievous and was nearly expelled for her handiwork. After graduating, she was frequently in trouble with the law, and went to prison more than once for violating the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy, though she has taken a softer stance in her old age.
Gwendolyn had a large family and, despite her harsh attitude, had compassionately took in others – such as Ryan Brennan, the No-Maj-born friend of her grandson Dion, who was disowned by his family after he was revealed to be a wizard. Most of her family, immediate and extended, lived together with her in her home in the suburbs of Los Angeles, California.
Gwendolyn Jones was an absurdly tall, bespectacled, dark-skinned women, with silver-tinted hair. During her youth spent at Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, she was frequently picked on by the other children, who believed her to be half-giant due to her abnormal size.
Behind the scenes
- The idea for Gwendolyn came from the grandmother of a close personal friend of Jacob Kingston's. She is also heavily inspired, mostly physically, by Mable Simmons – Tyler Perry's infamous Madea character, from the franchise of the same name – and was born after the author asked himself, "What would Madea be like if she were a witch living in Los Angeles?" The author decided to merge the ideas into one, and thus Gwendolyn was born.
- Aspects of her character (e.g., the large family, her matriarchal role, her motherly nature) were inspired by Molly Weasley, despite those also being traits of Mable Simmons.
